Let's Do It Again!

Yup.
I'm going to apply for another Disney College Program.
I'm dying with excitement.
I'm waiting patiently
I'm checking the application website like a crazed Disney-aholic.

I just want to apply already!
I want to do my interview,
I want to start planning for my future!
I want to be back at the magic!

So many exclamation points!!!

Things They Don't Tell You About The Disney College Program

I have been lucky enough to participate in TWO programs, where I spent 10 months as a character performer hanging out with Mickey and Minnie, and 2 months exploring the rivers of the world on the Jungle Cruise. The Disney College Program was truly a magical experience for me, but even with it being magical, there's stuff people don't warn you about. So here I am, warning you myself.

Section One: Disney Transportation.

1. The Disney Bubble. If you fly to Orlando, chances are pretty much 100% you plan to use the buses provided by the Disney housing to get to work and around Orlando. Let me tell you, the only 'non-Disney' affiliated stops are at the post office, Walmart, Publix, and a few other necessity stores. While this did not bug me in the slightest, it did irritate some friends, who were forced to wait for the occasional Universal Studios bus or the even less occasional 'Party Bus' to Miami. If you plan to travel outside the Disney Bubble, quickly make friends with someone who's got a car.

2. Grocery Shopping. It's a nightmare for us bus riders. Why, you may ask? Because instead of pushing your convenient shopping cart to your trunk, loading it up, driving to your home and unloading from your driveway... you push your shopping cart to the bus stop, hang every single bag on your arms, haul them up the bus steps, sit hunched over your possessions like Gollom, and then take every single bag off the bus and walk/run back to your apartment before you loose all sensation in both arms. And don't forget the mandated stop at security to show your housing ID. So better have that sucker in your mouth to hurry along the process. You're welcome for the tip.

3. The bus drivers. Now, don't get me wrong. I am very grateful that these individuals drove me from stop to stop every single day of my 5 months in Orlando. Without them, I would have walked everywhere, or become very proficient at hitch hiking. I'm sure these souls get bored throughout their day, which turns the timid, silent creature into a living, talking, singing human being. That's fine, driver, go ahead and talk with the sucker who sat right next to the entrance door. But for the love of all things, whistling and making police siren noises? Please, dear driver, stop. Especially at 4:54 in the bloody morning.

4. The morning bus drivers. When I say morning, I'm talking about my 6 A.M character dining shifts, which required me to board a bus at 4:54 in the morning. These trips to the parks were usually incredibly cold and silent, and all the poor souls on the bus were just as sleepy as me. While some days Whistling Bob was our driver (see above) most mornings the kindest gentleman drove. He asked each one of us our destination while boarding that pitifully early in the morning, and would take care to make sure that everyone got off at their destination. This did require him to occasionally park, unbuckle, and walk back to wake a kid up and gently tell them they were at the sleeper's stop. While that was never required for me (once I'm up, I'm up) it was nice to know that if I did miraculously fall back asleep, he'd be there to ensure Mickey Mouse would be at the resort for breakfast with the kiddos. Thank you, morning driver.

5. Bus reliability. I had heard horror stories of the unreliable buses making kids late for work, so, to be safe, I always found the bus that would get me to work within minutes of my shift starting, and I'd take the bus before that one, usually giving myself 20-30 minutes to get ready for warm ups and my clock in time. In the five months I worked there, only one 4:54 A.M bus never showed, which meant I had to wait for the 5:15 bus, which sent me running willy-nilly through the tunnels to clock in exactly-on-time and nearly cause a heart attack. The buses that were notorious for no-show's? The resort buses. Dear friends, if there is even a remote possibility that you may get a role at a hotel, consider driving yourself. The resort buses usually hit 3-5 hotels, and yours may be last, making the ride long and tedious. I really never had a problem with park buses, but maybe I was incredibly fortunate.

Section Two: Housing.

6. I loved Chatham Square. It's such a great place to live. Most activities were at the Chatham lawn, and it was the last complex to get picked up on most bus routes, which meant getting to your destination was the fastest. (On the flip side, getting home was the slowest) If I could recommend a particular apartment, go for a 6 person apartment. while you do pay a few bucks more each week than an 8 person apartment, the perks are so worth it. The 8 person layout has 4 people to a bathroom, with one spare half bath in the hallway. The 6 person layout provides a bathroom to each bedroom, meaning 2 people to a full bath. For the convenience of that alone, choose the 6.

7. Please remember your passport or Social Security Card. I completely forgot my SS card, and my daddy had to overnight it to me at who knows what expense so I could start training. It's crazy to think that if he hadn't done that for me, I wouldn't have trained with the people who have become such wonderful friends to me. Tape your card to your forehead if you think you'll forget.

8. Understand that Disney housing is quite expensive.  Since the cast-wide pay raise near the end of 2014, program housing has gone up quite dramatically. Expect to pay $110 a week for a 6 person Chatham, and upwards of $125 a week for smaller apartments. Disney has now introduced bunk-beds in some apartments, which will shave a few dollars off your rent each week, if that is a situation you are willing to live with.

9. Get familiar with DORMS. Online check in wasn't a thing during my first program in 2012. Now, you can pick roommates and request a specific housing complex through DORMS, which has been a great improvement in the housing process. The program blog has fantastic information on how it works. Give them a look-see.

Section Three: Money.

10. Disney Scheduling. A large part of recruitment is Disney's emphasis on your full-time status as a cast member. Fun fact: full-time is considered 32 hours, not 40 like you would expect. This means you are guaranteed 32 hours each week, no more, no less. This was very surprising to CP's who found themselves working significantly less hours than they anticipated, and making less money than they hoped. The good news, though, is CP's are welcome to pick up additional shifts as available on the extra hours hotline. One week I worked 74 hours, and none of my leaders had an issue with it.

11. Your anticipated pay. The cast-wide pay raise in 2014 bumped everyone to $9 an hour minimum wage. I, as a character performer took home $9.20 an hour, with the only higher CP pay being face character performers. Doing some quick math shows that 32 hours at 9 dollars an hour comes to 288 dollars a week, before housing is automatically deducted, and before taxes. Keep in mind this is based on the minimum guaranteed hours, and you may easily be scheduled far more than 32 hours a week.

Section Four: Disney Depression.

12. Homesickness. I went to university in the same state I was raised in. Visiting family was an easy 2 hour drive on the weekend, so moving across the country was a huge change for me. Luckily, I never had a breakdown or cried because I missed my family so much. We Skyped occasionally and talked and texted regularly. It was easy for me to be so far from home, but I know many people who considered going home because the homesickness was so bad. I know a few who actually did go home. Really evaluate if you can go months without seeing family before signing up for this experience.

13. After Disney Depression. It's real. Almost daily, I think back to something about the Disney College Program. I now have the job I've wanted all my life, but I would drop everything in an instant just for the chance to go back to Florida again. Living and working at Disney will, without a doubt, be the most magical time in your life. Sure, you'll have rough days, days when the bus doesn't show, or a guest drives you crazy, or your costume digs in uncomfortable places. But when you get over those bumps in the road, the DCP is an amazing experience. You are lucky to be accepted to a CP, and you will grow to love the experience. My suggestion for combating Disney Depression is to reach out to the friends you made on the CP and talk to them, chances are they miss it just as much as you do.

The number one thing people don't tell you about the DCP is that it will be the best experience of your life if you put a positive attitude into it. If you go with a good attitude, and it turns into a sucky attitude, so will your memories. Go and have the time of your life.

Disney-versary

A year ago today, I checked in to the Disney College Program.
It's been a full year.

I miss the DCP dearly. I miss my job, my roommates, my friends, the magic, the parks, the food, the memories, even the bus rides.

The DCP changed my life forever. My Disney friends have changed me forever.

I'm half sad, and half grateful for today. I would give anything to go back, right now. Drive to the airport and get on a plane, tonight. But at the same time, I look at my life right now, and I'm accomplishing a dream I've had all my life. I'm going to become a nurse!

In honor of today, I'm going to indulge myself, and put my ridiculous childish new dream on here, and in 2 years from now, we'll see if it happens.

June 2013- Go to FL and work to keep my seasonal status
May 2014- Graduate nursing school
June 2014- Go to FL and work to keep my seasonal status
Late 2014- Get a job in a FL hospital and pick up character shifts PRN.

I know it's lofty. I know it's the biggest Peter Pan dream (run away to Neverland, and never grow up). But my inspiration, Walt Disney had the loftiest goal of all, and he accomplished it. So why can't I have a huge, incredible, Monstro the Whale sized dream?

Maybe it won't ever come true.
But I am so grateful to have the ability to have this dream. This goal. This piece of magic that could easily become a part of my life.

Happy one year anniversary, Disney. Thank you for welcoming me into your family, and for letting me stick around. I promise to do you proud.

when i have time to think

I've been pretty depressed lately. Not in an 'i need to seek help' sort of way,
but in an 'i feel alone and wish i was still in Florida' sort of way.

The day I landed in Utah, after spending 6 magical months at Disney World, i stepped right into a busy, crazy lifestyle that kept me going, and kept Disney off my mind for about a solid month. I changed my hair color, I drove to Price and bought an apartment. I caught up with friends from home, I spent a week with friends from Disney. I unpacked my suitcases, and packed up my every belonging and moved out (mostly, sorry mom, I'll get those boxes out soon, i promise). I celebrated my twenty-first birthday, and started nursing school in the same month. I was doing great, and Disney crossed my mind not nearly as much as I thought it would.

But now i've been home two months, and i've been living in Price for one of those months, and Disney has invaded my mind. And since taking my final exam on Friday of last week, it's been almost all-consuming. When I have time to myself, to sit and think. To look at my life, where i am, where i was, i get serious Disney-Depression. It's not fair to myself, i know.  I know i should be thankful for that amazing experience, and focus on being thankful for this new experience that i've been dreaming of all my life.My problem? This new experience can't hold a candle to Disney. I have every hope that soon, in two weeks, it will. Once fall semester starts up, and I am busy, making new friends, and learning new things, i have no doubt i will have the time of my life. But right now, this very moment, i'm sad, alone, bored, and depressed.

I can't be alone. I get depressed. I need to be with people, or at least studying or reading a book. When i'm doing nothing, i think, and when i think, i think of Mickey Mouse and how much my heart misses the Place Where Dreams Come True.

I can't sit and wait for my Gold Ticket. I've got to get out and find things to occupy my mind with.
I  will be forever grateful for the Disney College Program, and how it changed my life. I am also grateful for the chance to go to nursing school, and I really can't wait to dive head first into school.

I Dread Disney Depression

I leave in less than 2 weeks.

I get teary almost every day.  I'm not ready to leave this place that's so filled with Magic.  My last schedule dropped today, which made me cry once I got into a bathroom stall. I've started checking things off my 'last hurrah' list. I'm saying goodbye to the things I love here.

I'm a mess!  I'm not ready to go!  You can't make me!  I won't let you take me alive!

slumps against the wall, dreading the inevitable.

I'm going to miss this, this amazing, life changing experience.

I love you, Disney World, with all my kiddish heart

{Disney Auditions!}

Today was the big day!
One word to describe how I feel: TIRED!
I slept at Leslie's apartment last night, and we both go to see each other's morning routines when we got ready at 7 A.M. I got ready earlier than I had expected, so we headed over early. We got to The Dance Club around 9 and check in wasn't scheduled until 9:30.  We were super surprised to see about 30 other people already there so early. Finally the Disney people had us sign in. Leslie was 33 and I was 34.  There were over 200 people auditioning in total.
I don't think Disney was prepared for that many people. The building they had rented (The Dance Club) could have held maybe 150 at maximum.  So they split us up in 3 big groups.  Tiffany the choreographer taught us the dance that was quite easy.  We performed it for the reciters, I was picked for the next round, and Leslie wasn't. :(
Then I spent 30 minutes talking with others in my group who made it through while they auditioned the other 2 groups.  Then we all went in to the main dance room and did the dance AGAIN.  Surprisingly, I made it though that round, and about 50 more people were sent home.
This is when the recruiters measured me (60.5 inches) and took my picture.  Tiffany then taught us another dance that was much more difficult.  I was bare footed and it made most of the dance hard to do.  Spinning bare footed is extremely difficult for me.  I wish I had my dance shoes, but they were tossed a while ago without my knowledge.  It started out totally simple. step clap step clap grapevine clap clap.  As the dance went on, she started throwing in potaboras and 'foot flicks' as she titled them.  I kept a huge smile plastered on my face, and did an okay job of keeping up with the 'pro dancers'.
We 'animated' planting a tree and washing a dog.  Pretty straight forward there.  I really wanted to animate meeting my favorite character, but oh well.  Washing the dog was really difficult because I was crouching most of the time, and I felt very closed off to the recruiters.
All in all, I had a really entertaining time.  My face hurts from smiling, and I really don't care if I am cast as a character or not.  Either way, I'm going to Florida with my dear friend Leslie.  I do wish Leslie would have gone farther in the audition.  I know she would be an AMAZING princess.  Oh well, I can't make the recruiters do anything.  Blast.
The auditions are over, and they are officially off my mind now.  I am proud of myself for exceeding my personal expectations, and it just felt really good to get my heart pumping though dance.  Leslie and I will hear the results by November 20 and until then, I have other things to focus on.  Like school.  Dreadful, school is.

Pricey!

Fees: $ 304
Flight: $210
Hotel: $50
Working for Disney: Priceless

While I am totally excited for this experience, It has really taken a dent out of my bank account!
The fee to do the program has risen in the last few semesters (from reading other blogs).  $100 of it went to program activities (like grocery bingo) and the other $200 went toward my first few housing payments (i think).
I'm flying Southwest Airlines, and my flight is January 8th.  Leslie told me about the perks of Southwest and I was hooked. They check 2 bags for absolutely free!  Oh my goodness that will be so helpful!  I also added $10 for Early- Bird Check In, which will confirm my seat 12 hours before everyone else, meaning I'll get a great pick of the plane. Now I'm anxiously awaiting Leslie's decision on what airline she's flying.  If she goes with Delta, I'll be flying all on my own for the first time in my life, which terrifies me.  I'm not looking forward to a layover with a airplane switch on my own.
While the hotel is not booked, it looks like Leslie and I will be spending the night before check in at a Disney Value resort.  All- Star Music or Sports.  When it's split between the 2 of us, it'll come out to be roughly $50 each.  Disney provides transportation from the airport to the hotel for free, which is so great for 2 20-year-olds who can't rent a car.  Now all I have to do is contact the hotel in the near future to see if there is transportation available to get us to Vista Way Apartments the next morning for check in.

Audition on Friday! EXCITED!

I'm In!

I've been accepted to the Spring 2012 Disney College Program!!!!!

I was so worried about being accepted, But then, in the middle of my work day yesterday, I got the most amazing email!

It was funny, really.  I was totally busy doing EKG's and I just had this thought "Wow, I haven't checked my email all morning!  I doubt it's there though."  I finished the EKG I was currently doing (on a woman no less. Talk about awkward 10 minutes) and opened a new web page and TA DA!  There was my acceptance email!
It was so hard to keep a straight face, and act normal for the rest of the day!  I slipped away for a few minutes to call Leslie and scream under my breath about my excitement.

Today I paid my fees ($304) and selected my arrival date: January 9th!  Leslie and I are both so excited!

Disney character auditions are next week!  Such excitement!

Phone Interview

Oh dear.

Just got off the phone with my Disney College interviewer and now I'm over analyzing everything.  I've read a ton of other's blogs who did the program and my interview wasn't anything like theirs.

She called early.  She didn't tell me when I would hear back from them. She didn't wish me a magical day.

I want this so badly, and I'm worried I just blew it.

I can't write any more of this right now, I'm giving myself an ulcer.

Embarrassed...

I feel so completely embarrassed.

Turns out my interview wasn't today.  I came home from school all excited and nervous and sat down in front of my phone to patiently wait for the call. I had all my notes and questions written out on paper and I was ready to go!

Then 2:30 rolls around and no call, so I wait 5 minutes, then 10, then 15.  At 3:00 I called the phone number listed at the end of my confirmation email.  I called it, and they had just closed (considering the 2 hour time difference).  Then I scrolled up to the top of the email and realized it said my interview was scheduled for Tuesday the 27th, not the 20th as I had thought.

Embarrassed doesn't even explain what I felt.  I was also slightly angry that I now had to wait a whole week to do the interview.  I ended up rescheduling it to this Saturday at 2:30.  I double checked that about 12 times before logging off.

So yup, I'm embarrassed and would like to crawl into a hole right now.  Though, in my defense when the calendar popped up for me to select my interview day, the first day available was Saturday the 24th and the following week.  I guess I assumed the 24th was actually the day I applied and the Tuesday I picked was today, not next Tuesday.

I've certainly learned my lesson though, double check the first time around.  So Saturday is the big day!
I'll let you know how it goes!
